When learning another language, many people can feel apprehensive about putting that language into practice. However, if you ever want to be fluent, you will have to learn to overcome your shyness and try to become more confident. Of course, that is easier said than done, which is why we have put together some helpful advice for you.
If you’re feeling stressed and nervous about speaking in English, you won’t be able to think clearly and will probably make even more mistakes. By making learning English an enjoyable experience, you’ll be too busy having a good time to notice your nerves. If that doesn’t work, you should try some deep breathing exercises to calm yourself down before your lessons etc.
Learn From Your Mistakes
The trick is to not let the fear of doing something wrong hold you back. Even native English speakers make mistakes with their pronunciation, spelling and grammar from time to time. It’s okay to slip-up sometimes; the best thing to do is learn from it and move on. In fact, the humour and embarrassment associated with your mistake will allow it to stick in your mind and you’ll be far less likely to make the same mistake again.
Start a Group Chat
If you have some friends who are also learning or already speak English, you could start a group chat with them via social media or your phone. This can be a place where you practice the language and if you don’t understand what someone has said, you can look it up and then respond appropriately. This takes away the pressure of having to reply straight away.
Putting your new language into practice is the best way to learn! Stay motivated by reminding yourself why you wanted to learn English in the first place and don’t be afraid to make a mistake.
